Liner Notes:

"YOU REALLY GOT ME" brought four English lads to international prominence in a hurry. The Kinks are those lads: Ray, Pete, Dave, and Mick, and, in the tradition of other great English groups like The Beatles and The Dave Clark Five, what they sing is largely their own material. The result is in this slam-bang album, keyed to a song which took off for the top of the English charts, lodged in the Number One spot in Great Britain, then took off on the same journey in the U.S.

To define The Kinks...

Take four art students dressed like characters from Dickens whose musical appreciation ranges from Chuck Berry to Johann Sebastian Bach. Add long hair and vocal sounds reminiscent of little Richard. Then mix in three guitars, a set of drums, and a flair for rhythm-and-blues, and you have the Kinks.

Up until they became internationally famous through "You Really Got Me" The Kinks played and sang for three years in the Muswell Hill section of London. They originally got together with the idea of making money to help with their studies at the Croydon School of Art, where they all studied. Their unconventional clothes -- capes with leather accessories, which, incidentally, they designed themselves -- made them well-known figures in Muswell Hill. They attracted the attention they needed to get them booked to play deb and society parties in London, and became such a success at these engagements that England's record makers pacted them.

From there on out, The Kinks became another of those legendary groups to take over the popularity charts both in England and the United States.

Personality, these are they:

RAY (Ray Davies) is the leader of The Kinks. He's 20 years old and almost six feet tall. He composes, listens politely to what the others have to say about his compositions, and then insists that they record exactly what he wrote in the first place. Vocalist, rhythm guitar, and harmonica player, he has very definite ideas of his own about almost everything, and enjoys an occasional sulk. He was born in Muswell Hill and has five sisters and one brother (the brother being Dave, the lead guitarist for the group). His favorite singers include Peggy Lee and Sonny Boy Williamson, and his taste for music ranges from Ravel to Gershwin to Chuck Berry. His hobbies include all sports and art.

DAVE (Dave Davies) is 17, and Ray's brother. He also sings and plays lead guitar. Although the youngest girl passes unnoticed when he's around. Dave is a great fan of Anita O'Day. Like his brother, he thinks sleeping is a great pastime, and quotes as his favorite composers Chuck Berry, Otis Blackwell, and, for classical music, Bach. His professional ambition, now just about realized, is to be a success not only in the United Kingdom but also in the United States.

PETE (Peter Ouaife) is 20. He's The Kinks' bass guitarist as well as vocalist. He's the quiet one, from Devon, and a Mod (sharp dresser). He enjoys Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand as singers, and his favorite classical and pop composers are Gustav Holst and Lennon-and-McCartney. He's a fan of horseback riding.

MICK (Michael Avory) is 19 and plays the drums. Open any of Mick's suitcases and on top of all his clothes you'll find a practice mat and a pair of drumsticks. Even without his drums he never stops drumming. Born in London, Mick's main hobby is reading and listening to Beethoven. Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters come high on his list of favorite artists, but tops is Shelly Manne. His professional ambition is to play drums well and to meet Shelly himself.
