From: "JJKB Evans" Subject: Great Lost KPS Album Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2000 00:10:40 +1000 Well it arrived yesterday and now for some words of review! Overall - it's great. There is a heap of talent out there in the KPS. I also suspect more than a couple of professional or semi-pro musicians were involved in some of the tracks. (If you aren't making money from your talent then you should be!) I won't review track by track, because there are a couple I like less than the rest, and a few people were stretching their vocal ranges to do Ray's songs, and I don't want to upset anyone. The selection of songs is great, it covers a wide range of years, it avoids many of the "classics" and brings to the fore a couple of very obscure songs. No one has strayed dramatically from the original styles/arrangements - you know like a beebop Lola or a punk See My Friends. (Neither of these songs are on the CD) Special mention must be made of Ayrton doing Hatred - mostly in his native Portugese - not only is this a good version, it's also great fun. John Banta's guitar work on 20th Century Man is so true the original. The Dumb Angels do a great Shangri-La. Doug Holland's I Go To Sleep is incredible. Possibly better then either Ray or Chrissie. Superhype do a mean Picture Book. The arrangement of Sunny Afternoon however gets the song of the album. The sleaze factor, the brass solo, the piano, plus really great vocals. Now to the bonus Spiv's CD Geoff, Geoff and Olga have had a lot of fun and put a lot of effort into turning out an album that's could be thought of as being as good as the KPS album. Another good selection - predominantly from the RCA years. I must say, Alcohol sounds like it was recorded after a lot was consumed. The bonus tracks - more good stuff, especially the Peter Seller's style Barques Les Meuses, which had me in fits of laughter reminding me of the Inspector Clousseau accent. Get onto your email and BUY them. - I'll probably get another copy for another Kinkophile I know. jme
